Ime it doesn't have enough switches to do both. Splitting a humbucker to a single coil would be a single coil. The Squier® Contemporary Jaguar® HH ST advertises split in some ads and tap in other ads. Tapping is tapping into a coil somewhere in the coil itself (ie all winds of coil are 7k maybe a tap at 4k) Single coils can be tapped (so therefore both coils of a humbucker can be tapped.) Multi coil pickups (notice I didn't say humbuckers) can be split. Instead of splitting the coils, a tap can be used which will still use both coils, maintain some hum bucking, sound thinner, maintain some highs and be less powerful. When it is used in humbucking mode it still has some highs but it may not cancel all of the hum due to the unequal coils.Ī humbucker can have taps. Some humbuckers have unequal winds on the two bobbins so when it is split it sounds thicker. A humbucker that is designed to be split has more winds to maintain some volume and sound a little thicker but when both coils have equal winds the full humbucker has less highs. There are too few winds on the coil so it sounds weedy and it is rather quiet. When it is split, only one coil is is functioning. On a PAF style humbucker, each coil may have 3000 winds. Ideally the two coils of a humbucker have equal lengths of wire so the two coils can efficiently quiet (buck) the *hum*.
